In October, The Rabbit hOle will open My Mother’s Father's Dragon: A Hero’s Journey and The Art of Living, a special exhibition that brings together original illustrations from the book My Father’s Dragon, immersive environments, and a personal window into the extraordinary lives of Ruth Stiles Gannett and her stepmother Ruth Chrisman Gannett.
First published in 1948, My Father’s Dragon is considered one of the best children’s books of all time and has served an ideal transition from picture books to chapter books for generations of young readers.
Ruth Stiles Gannett wrote the book, which would become a series of three, when she was in her mid-twenties and between jobs. Random House accepted the book for publication, and her stepmother, Ruth Chrisman Gannett, illustrated the book. In 1949, it won a Newbery Honor.
In addition to the soaring adventure of a little boy named Elmer Elevator, who runs away to rescue a baby dragon, Ruth Stiles Gannett’s world-building extended into every aspect of her life.

“We know visitors will marvel at Ruth Chrisman Gannett’s original lithograph illustrations,” said Rabbit hOle co-director and exhibit curator Pete Cowdin.
“But we also want to impart the creative genius of Ruth Stiles Gannett who, in spite of international acclaim, eschewed the title of author. By weaving together her story – growing up surrounded by artists and guided by the tenets of progressive education – we deepen our understanding and appreciation of this classic book and Elmer’s heroic journey.”
The exhibition, which runs from October 11, 2025 through August 15, 2026, is the first-ever exhibit in The Rabbit hOle’s Discovery Gallery, which was designed to showcase original children’s book art. It was created in partnership with the family of Ruth Stiles Gannett and The Kerlan Collection of Children's Literature at the University of Minnesota.
Rabbit hOle Members are invited to a special opening reception on October 11, 2025 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The family-friendly celebration will include remarks from Ruth Stiles Gannett’s family and a performance by American Wild Ensemble. Tickets are limited and registration is required. Learn more.
